Designing a cleaner website rhythm
Spacing is the invisible structure of a site. When headings, paragraphs, and images follow a predictable rhythm, everything feels calmer and more intentional.
Start with the baseline
A simple baseline is a consistent paragraph size and a consistent paragraph bottom margin. Once your body copy is locked, heading margins can “snap” to that same rhythm.
Why consistent margins matter
Inconsistent spacing makes pages feel noisy. Consistent spacing creates an editorial flow that makes scanning easier, especially on longer pages.
A quick rule
Make heading bottom margins slightly smaller as headings get smaller, and make heading top margins slightly larger than the paragraph gap so new sections breathe.
Headings stacked on headings
Sometimes you stack an H2 and H3 back to back. The goal is to keep them visually related, not separated like two different sections.
Example section title
This paragraph is here to show how the H3 hands off to body copy with a clean, readable gap. If it feels too airy, reduce the H3 top margin slightly.
When a heading follows an image
This section tests the “image → heading” transition. The top margin on the H2 should create separation without feeling like a huge blank band.
Small checklist
Keep a close eye on mobile. If headings feel too far apart on small screens, you can add a responsive override later, but a strong global default is still worth it.

Good spacing is a design system you feel more than you notice. When it’s right, the page reads clean, looks confident, and everything feels easier.
